Black female athletes go down in Winter Olympic history
Erin Jackson became the first black female athlete to win a gold medal in speed skating at the Winter Olympics.
Erin Jackson of the US won gold in the 500 m speed skating event with a time of 37 seconds 04. She hugged her coach, then fell down to celebrate, after surpassing the runner-up Miho Takagi (Japan) exactly 8% seconds.
Jackson also became the first American female athlete to win gold in this content since 1994. Four years ago, she became the first American female athlete of color to compete in speed skating at the Summer Olympics. East, and is now the first black female athlete to win a gold medal in speed skating, according to Insider.

"Hopefully my achievement will inspire other kids of color," Jackson said.
The 29-year-old girl and compatriot Shani Davis are the only two black athletes to win Olympic medals in speed skating.
Jackson almost missed his chance to attend the Beijing 2022 Olympics, after slipping during a qualifying race. Her record wasn't enough to secure two top spots for the American athletes, but teammate Brittany Bowe gave her spot to Jackson.
"I want this moment to be all about Jackson. She did it, made it to the starting line by herself and skated the best 500 meters of her life to become an Olympic champion," Bowe said of his colleague.
Bowe was added to the 500 m roster after other countries did not have enough athletes to qualify. She finished 16th with a time of 38 seconds 04. Bowe's forte is the 1,000 m event.
